"WTC 4, 5, and 6 are eight- and nine-story steel-framed office buildings, located on the north and east sides of the WTC Plaza, that were built circa 1970. The buildings had a range of occupancies, including standard office and retail space. Because of their close proximity to WTC 1 and WTC 2, all three buildings were subjected to severe debris impact damage when the towers collapsed, as well as the fires that developed from the debris. Most of WTC 4 collapsed when impacted by the exterior column debris from WTC 2; the remaining section had a complete burnout. WTC 5 and WTC 6 were impacted by exterior column debris from WTC 1 that caused large sections of localized collapse and subsequent fires spread throughout most of the buildings. All three buildings also were able to resist progressive collapse, in spite of the extensive local collapses that occurred. In general, the buildings responded as expected to the impact loadings. Collapse was often localized, although half of WTC 4 and most of the central part of WTC 6 suffered collapse on all floors. The damage was consistent with the observed impact load." - FEMA 403, Chp 4 [local] |

Study of Traces of Tritium at the World Trade Center "The World Trade Center (WTC), the symbol of New York City, had been built in the 1960s through the 1980s. It contained 7 buildings designated as WTC 1 through WTC 7. The most prominent were the 110-floor Twin Towers, WTC 1 - The North Tower built in 1970 and WTC 2 - The South Tower built in 1972. The WTC was owned and operated by [the] Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). It is important to this investigation that several federal law enforcement agencies were located at the WTC (Miller, 2001; Cummings, 2002). US Customs and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) were housed in WTC 6, also called the US Customs House. US Secret Service and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had offices in WTC 7, in addition to the New York City emergency command center. The collapsing Towers destroyed other WTC buildings and the debris compacted and destroyed much of the Bathtub. The debris from WTC 1 plunged through the center of WTC 6 creating a pit stretching down to the basement of the Bathtub (Slobin, 2001). WTC hosted several law-enforcement agencies such as ATF, CIA, US Secret Service and US Customs. The ATF office had two weapon vaults in WTC Building 6. Also 63 Police Officers, possibly carrying handguns, died in the attack." - Lawrence Livermore Labs (10/01/02)
